New Mom in Denmark

Impact measurement of projects for DRC Danish Refugee Council

DRC Danish Refugee Council uses Socialwise to measure the effects of three different initiatives: New Mother in Denmark, Fritidsindsatsen and Livet Går Videre.

The New Mother in Denmark initiative gives children with minority ethnic backgrounds a good start in life by supporting alternative mother groups. Mothers groups are for babies 0-1 years old and their mothers with refugee or ethnic minority backgrounds. Some of the women live in disadvantaged neighborhoods. New Mother in Denmark contributes to supporting the mothers and improving the babies’ chances and viability throughout life – for the benefit of the individual and society as a whole.

The leisure initiative aims to strengthen participation in local associations and leisure communities for children and young people with a refugee background. Among other things, the initiative works to equip parents with a refugee background with knowledge and an increased understanding of community life and local associations, so that they are better equipped to support their children’s leisure participation. Volunteer facilitators are trained in empowerment methods to engage with parents about expectations and frameworks. The facilitators also help accompany the parents and child to the leisure activity for the first few times and follow up with the families to ensure that the child remains active in the chosen club.

Livet Går Videre is a project where resourceful volunteers are individually matched with people with refugee or ethnic minority backgrounds who are being treated for trauma in psychiatry. The individual, caring and patient efforts of the volunteer help to rebuild trust with other people, which often develops into a real friendship. The volunteer network person is an aftercare to the professional treatment and acts as a ‘window’ to the surrounding community. The aim is to break isolation and contribute to a brighter everyday life for the individual.
